Post Conference Workshops: 1 October 2010
- Workshop A: Latest Developments in Geospatial Imagery Analysis
- Workshop B: Developing an SDI for Efficient Data Management and Interoperability
- Workshop C: Building Geospatial Web Applications without a GIS
08:30 – 11:30 Workshop A: Latest Developments in Geospatial Imagery Analysis
(inclusive of 30 minutes break)
Rationale:
With the advancements in Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) and terrain mapping, imagery intelligence is gaining prime importance for a number of applications including surveillance and reconnaissance, search and rescue operations, counter terrorism operations etc. This workshop will provide an overview of the emerging technologies in this field and is designed to develop the skills of professional imagery analysts who need to be aware of, or analyse, imagery for the purpose of intelligence.
Discussion points:
- Understanding the training requirements for imagery sensors (optical, infrared and radar)
- Analysing the role of commercial satellite imagery (CSI) to obtain clear and detailed images
- Best practise methods for collection and intelligence report writing

15:30 Workshop B:
Developing an SDI for Efficient Data Management and Interoperability
(inclusive of 30 minutes break)
Rationale:
The world is increasingly being driven by rapid changes in information technology. As governments realise the potential of these technological advancements, there is an increased investment communications technology including spatial datasets like maps and imagery. However, the challenge to integrate and manage all this data into a single platform remains.
Discussion points:
- Understanding the challenges of varying data formats and data collection over large landmasses
- Considering the importance of an SDI for the move towards enterprise government
- Looking at some recent developments in metadata and integration into the data warehouse
- Developing strategies for enhancing data sharing and integration under one common platform
Workshop Leader:

19:00 Workshop C:
Building Geospatial Web Applications without a GIS
(inclusive of 30 minutes break)
Rationale:
Are you impressed by all those cool internet mapping applications built on top of interactive mapping services such as Google Map, Virtual earth, Yahoo Map and want to design some of your own internet mapping applications? This workshop will share with you the rich internet application (RIA) approach to build an application-centric geospatial web without having to invest into expansive GIS server technology. It will provide you with a stepby- step guide on how to build basic geospatial web applications by consuming different internet mapping services.
Discussion points:
- Challenges in developing spatially enabled eGovernment using web-based GIS approach
- Introducing Rich Internet Applications (RIA) approach and technology
- Looking at real world examples of RIA-based applications and its application for the defense sector
- Going through a step-by-step guide on how to design spatially enabled eGovernment application using RIA technology
