With 25+ speakers this year, GDI APAC will feature:

• Double the number of end user presentations
• Case studies from Japan, New Zealand, Thailand, Taiwan, UAE, Brunei, South Korea and UK
• Special focus on national security and counter terrorism operations, including a pre-conference ‘Geospatial Capabilities Focus Day’

Showcasing Key Applications Featured in GDI APAC 2010:

• John Teufert from NATO’s Consultation, Command and Control Agency will be presenting an operational case on NATO’s experience in Afghanistan and the role of geospatial tools in countering insurgency and urban warfare against the Taliban forces. The presentation will talk about a network-centric approach utilizing state-of-the-art GIS technology and open standards that apply to both the data exchange protocols and the data formats; touching upon the Recognised Environmental Picture (REP) architecture that was tested during the NATO Coalition Warrior Interoperability Demonstration (CWID) 2005 in Lillehammer.
• Major General Girish Kumar will present on the Delhi Spatial Data Infrastructure Project (DSSDI), a pilot project by the Department of Science and Technology. As a part of the project, a monitoring room was established to receive images from ten cameras placed at vantage points to do the change detection on real time as occurring on the ground. The idea is to use the 3D images for security and crowd control for the Commonwealth Games in 2010. The project will cover a total area of NCT Delhi of ~1500 Sq. km. The project comprises of two major components, Land Information System (LIS) of NCT of Delhi and Urban Spatial Information System (USIS). The LIS will have up to date cadastral information. The system developed will be chiefly used for disaster management, traffic management, security of important buildings and other valuable infrastructural assets in Delhi.
• Richard Smith of the British Transport Police will provide an insight on the use of geospatial tools for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London in 2010 for security, crowd control and other applications. The BTP used the ERDAS APOLLO platform that provided the tools to efficiently store and quickly share massive amounts of gridded data throughout the GIS enterprise, using various domain specific applications. The unified enterprise platform manages and serves large volumes of geospatial data located and distributed across an organisation. Additionally, Mr. Smith will also touch upon the attempt to integrate imagery in the British Transport Police’s mapping solution that is delivered via Web Mapping Service (WMS) and Web Feature Service (WFS) through the BTP Intranet. The whole system is designed for applications like operational and strategic planning, crime analysis and civil contingency planning.
• Major General (Dr) Siva Kumar from India will be highlighting the NSDI is an initiative by the Government of India to encapsulate various types and formats of geospatial data from a number of government and non-government organisations onto one platform for use by the citizens. The India NSDI Portal is one primary section of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI). The ultimate goal of the NSDI is to make geospatial information available to the ‘whole of government’ and the public for easier and faster access.
